Erecting a Headstone

Headstones are erected as identifying markers on a loved one’s grave, and serves as a focal point for visitors. Important details are depicted on headstones, like date of birth and death, proper name and perhaps even a special image or quote significant to the person, which is why choosing a good headstone inscription is a big decision for a grieving family, and need not be done straight away.

In the UK it is common to wait several months, even up to a year before erecting the tombstone. This is due to a variety of reasons including:

  • In many circumstances the earth around the new grave will require time to settle so it is stable enough to support a headstone.
  • Sometimes administrative work slows the process
  • Allowing time to pass between a loved one’s burial and the final ceremony of erecting a headstone can allow the family important time to grieve
  • Ordering and creating a custom stone can take a fair amount of time, due to busyness of the stonemason and getting proper allowances from the cemetery.

What Permissions are needed to erect a Headstone?

Cemeteries are generally either parish-run facilities, or are owned by a County Council.

Each location has individual rules and guidelines in regards to headstones, and the fees charged vary from cemetery to cemetery. Stonemasons & headstone markers normally apply for such permissions on behalf of the client, with fees being absorbed into the cost of the stone. After the cemetery grants permissions for the stone, work commences.

Some cemeteries have strict regulations when it comes to headstone erections, and stones have to meet the limitations they have established. Again, the manufacturer will correspond with the burial site on your behalf.

Permission for Cemetery Authorities

On behalf of the customer, the headstone makers will apply to the cemetery authorities for the required permits to erect a headstone. Signatures of the current grave owner will be required on all relevant documentation in regards to placing a headstone.

Clients will be contacted after the permit has been approved, and the creation of the stone will begin, as well as pertinent details about when the stone will be completed and installed. Length of time varies, depending on whether a foundation is present or not.

How Soon Can a Headstone be Placed After Burial

The answer to this is heavily dependant on the cemetery chosen, as well as permits and the stone maker, but on average the fastest is 4 weeks.

Most people choose to wait even longer, or are forced to because of construction times or permitting. Some people choose an installation date based on religious holidays, birthdays or other special occasions. The average length of time before a headstone is erected ranges between 4-8 months, depending on the location.
